As it currently stands, 4 lawsuits have been filed, with 3 coming from the Friends of Oceano Dunes and 1 filed by EcoLogic Partners, a consortium consisting of the American Sand Association, the American Motorcyclists Association District 37, and the Off-Road Business Association. We do not anticipate that any of these lawsuits will be successful and that the CCC’s decision was well within their authority to make under the California Coastal Act. Co-Chair Born on Oahu, Hawaii and raised in Southern California, Cassie has always felt a deep connection to nature and caring for her local environment. Upon moving to SLO in 2014 to attend Cal Poly, Cassie fell in love with the natural beauty that the Central Coast has to offer, which quickly spurred her passion for environmental sustainability and ultimately resulted in her joining ECOSLO in 2017 as an Event Coordinator Intern. After venturing to the East Coast in 2018 to start her career in nonprofit fundraising, (being the West Coast baby at heart that she is) Cassie moved back to the Central Coast in 2022 where she now lives, plays, and explores alongside her partner and puppy, while continuing to work as Director of Development for Food Recovery Network. Audrey followed this passion in college at TCU, where her research focussed on the ecological impacts of our national energy system. Eager to dive deeper into energy and climate science, she moved to the central coast of California and attended graduate school at UCSB. Audrey now proudly calls San Luis Obispo home and still spends her time exploring the wetlands and woods (and now ocean!). As a kid, she was more interested in bugs than dolls, a curiosity that grew into a lifelong passion for environmental conservation. She has worked as a biologist and has volunteered with several wildlife rehabilitation organizations. Currently, Kira is an environmental planner at an environmental engineering firm, where she supports project development by guiding environmental review, securing permits, and coordinating with regulatory agencies and stakeholders to protect natural resources. She first connected with ECOSLO through beach cleanups and has long admired ECOSLO’s commitment to community-based environmental stewardship. In Santa Maria, her pastime was hiking and running the Santa Maria Valley Open Space when it opened in the 2010s, and it was great to see so much excitement for a trail system in the community. Miranda graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Environmental Studies, and in 2016, she moved to SLO to serve as an AmeriCorps Member and later the Community Engagement Coordinator for One Cool Earth. During that time, she supported ECOSLO by attending events and volunteering. Miranda has always appreciated her time in nature and is grateful for how much open space SLO has to offer. She began her career designing drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems for vineyards and various crops, and later led the Irrigation Mobile Lab with the Cachuma Resource Conservation District, where she advised growers on improving irrigation efficiency. Since 2008, Monica has worked with the Central Coast Water Board, focusing on irrigation and nutrient management and implementing agricultural regulatory programs in the central coast. A pronoun is a word used in place of a proper noun when it is already clear through context who is being referred to. Pronouns are used to limit redundancy when the person or thing being referred to is already clear. Examples of pronouns are she/her/it/you/we/they as well as several others you may be familiar with through everyday speech. Personal pronouns are the pronouns an individual chooses to be referred to by that best fit their personal identity (for example she/her/hers). Often, when we refer to individuals we do not know, we make assumptions about what their pronouns may be. While this is common, it is important to remember that you cannot tell someone’s pronouns by the way they look or present themselves. It is always best to ask someone what pronouns they use instead of making assumptions about what pronouns they may use. How we are expressing personal pronouns at ECOSLO At ECOSLO we have chosen to include pronouns on our email signatures and biographies, as well as in materials such as volunteer forms and surveys, as a way of normalizing not making assumptions about other people’s personal pronouns. When everyone makes an effort to assert their pronouns, it removes the burden on trans and nonbinary people to start the conversation about pronouns themselves. We at ECOSLO want to make it clear that we value everyone being referred to in a way that is affirming to them and their identity. It is important to remember that everyone – regardless of gender identity – has personal pronouns. If you feel it would be hurtful for someone to refer to you based on assumptions they have made, then you understand why it is so important to not refer to someone with pronouns based on assumption. Adding your pronouns into things like your email signature or including it as part of meeting introductions are great ways to challenge assumptions of gender and assert your belief that people deserve
