From the yeast we use to make bread, to producing essential medicine such as penicillin, humans benefit immensely from the diversity of fungi that exists on Planet Earth. Guest speakers, Alex Torres-Tarver and Sienna Streamfellow talked about mycology (the study of fungi), the role fungi play in ecosystems, and some of the innovative ways humans are using fungi to solve problems.
Beavers in the Salinas River
Winding for roughly 150 miles through the Central Coast landscape, the Salinas River is home to a large rodent with big teeth - the beaver. These powerful swimmers and dam-building engineers contribute to the health of our local watersheds by altering the flow of streams and rivers. According to National Geographic, beavers have the ability to manipulate their environment more than any other species besides our own.
